August 2016 - CETA CHECK: GRILL YOUR MINISTER THIS SUMMER  Dear friends, We are very happy to share with you the first results of our CETA CHECK! Campaign. To date over 15,000 citizens from all over Europe have sent questions to their members of the European Parliament (MEPs) to express their concerns about CETA; the proposed EU-Canada free trade agreement. This has delivered more than 850 answers from MEPs so far. With a total of fifteen questions and 700 MEPs to chose from, we need you and your friends to ask more questions via the CETA CHECK! website in the coming weeks and months. This will be crucial and decisive as the European Parliament (EP) is scheduled to vote on CETA late this year. Your constant pressure has already given rise to important changes: the EU Commission changed its mind to propose CETA as a ‘mixed’ agreement. This means that Member State parliaments will also need to vote on CETA. However, the battle is not over yet! Right now the Commission is trying to perform another trick to fast-track CETA. If our governments accept it (and right now they seem ready to do so), over 90% of CETA would enter into force through a procedure called provisional application. In other words, CETA could be put in action before it reaches the EP and national parliaments. To take action on this, we are introducing a new feature on the CETA CHECK! tool. In addition to Members of the European Parliament,you can now also ask questions to your government representatives who will be responsible for this important decision! Since this is a crucial point in the timeline of the CETA ratification process, every single action to increase the pressure on decision-makers is very important.
